Installing And Maintaining Concrete Pool Deck, Patio, And Driveway Coatings

Installing concrete in your driveway, pool deck, or patio is a great way to ensure that you have an attractive and long-lasting surface. There are some important things to take into consideration during installation, however, as well as steps to take to make sure that your concrete is in good condition for the duration of its lifetime. Once you are sure the soil is firm and compact enough, it is time to install your concrete. There is a catch to this as well, however. It is essential that you make sure the concrete is compressed while it is being applied around your pool deck, patio, or driveway. It is a lesser known fact that if concrete gets bent or stretched out while it is being applied that it will lose the majority of its strength. This will also lead to potential cracking in the future, so it is best to avoid if possible.

In addition to this expansion, it is also beneficial to prevent expansion with the changing of temperature and season. This is another common cause for cracks, but can be avoided with installation of control joints within the slabs of concrete. These lines give greater control over where the concrete is applied, and helps to control expansion. Another way to avoid cracks is to remove a few inches of grass all around the area of the exterior concrete. This prevents the grass from growing in cracks in the concrete, and lessens the chances of the roots growing under the concrete and further endangering the slabs. All trees and bushes near the concrete should also be removed to prevent this from happening.

Once installed, it is vital that you take the necessary steps to keep your concrete in good condition. Cleaning spills and stains right away is incredibly important, and can be done easily with a pressure washer. This is especially key when dealing with oil stains. If you live in colder climates with consistent snowfall throughout the winter, make sure to shovel your concrete frequently. However, be sure to hold your shovel at an angle so that you do not put scratches in or accidentally remove sealant. Be sure to use a de-icing product rather than melting salts to keep your driveway or concrete patio safe, as salt is very damaging to concrete and will slowly eat it away. This will cause pits and holes that are unattractive and can be costly to repair.
